Mykonos to Athens by Ferry and Flight. All you need to know (2024 update)

Here is a helpful guide to help you choose the best way to travel from Mykonos to Athens. Mykonos is an extremely popular island, that is why there are many tourists desiring to visit the island especially in summer. Several ferry companies are constantly operating on Mykonos-Athens connection, even during the low season.

The most active period for ferry transportation starts in May and lasts until late October.

Short answers to FAQ’s about traveling from Mykonos to Athens

Mykonos to Athens – Ferry or Flight? – Traveling by flight will cost you more but you will get there within 35-40 minutes. So, if you are not in a hurry, then definitely choose transportation by ferry.

Mykonos to Athens – Ferry price – the price range varies between 20 €- 90 €, depending on the route and ferry company you choose.

Mykonos to Athens – Ferry travel duration – To Rafina: around 3h 45m by conventional ferries and 2h 10m by high-speed catamarans.
To Piraeus: approximately 5h 15m by conventional ferries and 3.5h by high-speed vessels.

Quick travel notes for Mykonos-Athens trip

Mykonos has 2 ferry ports: “Old port” and “New port”. The old port is mostly used by smaller ferries and the new port for bigger ones. Make sure to confirm the departure port of your ferry, because it may change due to ferry traffic or weather conditions.

When traveling to Athens, you will either arrive at Piraeus or Rafina port.

The ferry route between Mykonos and Athens operates daily throughout the year. During winter, there will be less ferries operating as Mykonos traffic drops substantially in the low season.

On Mykonos- Athens connection only conventional ferries operate during winter and starting from May to late October high-speed SeaJets catamarans start operating on this route.

During the high season the ferry tickets sell out quickly, so make sure to book your tickets in advance.

If you book the ferry tickets online, you can get them at the port or a travel agency in the main town. Pick up the tickets in advance to be sure you have them.

The ferries sail between Mykonos and Athens minimum 6 times per day.

On Mykonos-Piraeus connection there are 3 main ferry companies operating: Blue Star Ferries (12 sailings per week), SeaJets (7 sailings per week) and Golden Star Ferries (14 sailings per week).

On Mykonos-Rafina connection the following main companies are operating: Fast Ferries (4 sailings per day), SeaJets (4 sailings per day), Golden Star Ferries (3 sailings per day).

There are both direct and transfer trips from Mykonos to Piraeus and Rafina. Usually, the stops are made in Paros, Naxos, and sometimes Sifnos.

In total, there are 33 sailings per week on Mykonos-Piraeus route.

From Mykonos to Athens by FERRY

Piraeus port

Piraeus is the most popular port in Athens. Blue Star Ferries, SeaJets and Golden Star Ferries are the main companies that have several sailings per week on Mykonos-Piraeus route. The departures start in the afternoon and there are also ferries leaving late in the evening.

There are indirect trips from Mykonos to Piraeus through Paros and Naxos. The highest price for the ticket reaches 87.50 €, which is Mykonos-Paros-Piraeus route traveled by Superrunner (Mykonos-Paros) and Highspeed 4 (Paros-Piraeus). The duration of the trip is 7 hours.

Rafina port

Rafina port is closer to Mykonos, thus ferry trip durations are shorter. There are 3 main ferry companies that have several sailings between Mykonos and Rafina: Fast Ferries, SeaJets, Golden Star Ferries. The earliest departure time is 07:35 in the morning, while the latest is 22:30.

From Mykonos to Athens by FLIGHT

There are direct flights available between Mykonos and Athens. Each route takes about 35-45 minutes, depending on the airline company. Volotea Airlines, Olympic Air, Sky Express and Aegean Airlines have flights in both directions. The flight durations don’t vary too much, so your choice will mostly depend on ticket prices.

The best airline out of the five (Volotea, Olympic, Aegean, Ellinair and Sky), is Aegean Airlines. Actually, Aegean and Olympic is now the same company, as Aegean Airlines has bought Olympic Airways, which used to belong to the Greek state but went bankrupt. Aegean Airlines is a private company and has been awarded many times as the best satellite airline in Europe. It is almost always punctual, its crew speaks perfect English and is very professional. It offers web and mobile check-in and is a very safe company to fly with, with the best pilots in Greece.

The code for the Athens Airport is [ATH] and the code for the Mykonos airport is [JMK]. Both Athens and Mykonos have only one airport each.

These planes do not have a lot of overhead space and you may need to give your carry-on luggage at the crew of the airplane, before climbing the steps to enter the aircraft.
