How to get to Mykonos from Santorini with a Ferry

The codename of the port in Santorini is [JTR]. Bear in mind that Santorini is also called “Thira”, so when you are searching for the departure port of Santorini on the web you can search for either “Santorini” or “Thira”.

The codename of the port in Mykonos is [JMK]. Actually Mykonos has two ports. The old port and the new one. But just input “Mykonos” in the port destination on the web and you will find all available ferry routes.

Below you can see the new port of Mykonos. You can see a cruise ship and a fast ferry leaving the port. The new port of Mykonos is around 7 minutes drive time from Mykonos town. You are not advised to walk from Mykonos town to it, as you would need to walk more than 25 minutes under the hot sun.

Standard vs Fast Ferries traveling from Santorini to Mykonos: There are two types of ferries traveling from Santorini to Mykonos. The standard ferries (lower price, bigger boats, more time to reach Mykonos, travelling with strong winds) and the fast ferries (higher price, smaller boats, less time to reach Mykonos, note travelling with strong winds). Also, some ferries accept vehicles (cars and motorbikes), while others don’t.

How long is the ferry ride from Santorini to Mykonos? The fastest ferry will take you from Santorini to Mykonos in 1hour and 55 minutes. The slowest ferry will take the trip in 4 hours.

The first ferry of the day during the peak season, leaves Santorini at 10:25 in the morning. The last ferry of the day leaves Santorini for Mykonos at 14:30 in the noon.

If you want to go from Santorini to Mykonos during the shoulder season or the low season, there are far less choices. For example, if you want to travel from Santorini to Mykonos in May, there are only four ferries per day, instead of the eight ferries per day that you will find during August. In April, there are only two ferries per day. In October there are six ferries per day.

If there are strong winds (above 6 Bf), some fast ferries don’t travel and you will need to change to a standard ferry, which is usually a much bigger ferry which can travel with stronger winds.

Santorini to Mykonos: Ferry or Flight?

There is no direct flight connecting Santorini’s airport with Mykonos airport. Olympic Airways has a flight with one stop in Athens, which flies from Santorini to Athens and then from Athens to Mykonos, in 2 hours and 20 minutes and a cost of 102 euros per person.

Obviously, this doesn’t make any sense, compared to getting a fast ferry from Santorini to Mykonos, paying 66 euros per person and reaching Mykonos in 2 hours.

So, if you wonder whether you should travel from Santorini to Mykonos with a Ferry or a flight, the answer is clear. Get a standard or fast ferry.

Santorini to Mykonos with a Helicopter
