This is a guide to help you organize your travels from Mykonos to Santorini. There are several ways to get from Mykonos to Santorini: with a fast or slow ferry, with an airplane, even with a helicopter. Here is all you need to know.

  • Mykonos – Santorini ferry connection operates from the end of March till the end of October.
  • Most of the ferry companies announce the ferry schedules at the beginning of each year (usually January or February).
  • During the summer months, there are ferries sailing between Mykonos and Santorini every day, with earliest leaving at 9:50 in the morning and the last at 18:30 in the afternoon.
  • Mykonos has 2 ferry ports: “Old port” and “New port”. The old port is mostly used by smaller ferries and the new port for bigger ones. Make sure to confirm the departure port of your ferry, because it may change due to ferry traffic or weather conditions.
  • Most of the ferries sailing from Mykonos to Santorini are small and thus it is advised to book tickets several months in advance, especially in high season (July – September), as the tickets sell out quickly.
  • The distance between Mykonos and Santorini is about 72.62 miles. The travel duration between Mykonos and Santorini is around 3 hours.
  • The codename of the Mykonos port is JMK and the codename of the Santorini port is JTR.
  • Usually, there are 3-4 ferries per day traveling between the two islands.
  • There are direct ferries from Mykonos to Santorini from April to October. And from November to March, there must be a transit ferry or flight to Athens in order to move between two islands.
  • There are 4-5 flights per week between Santorini and Mykonos (April- mid-October). The flight schedule is published in December or sometimes January and are sold out quickly.
  • If you book the ferry tickets online, you can get them at the port or at a travel agency in the main town. Pick up the tickets in advance to be sure you have them.

From Mykonos to Santorini by FERRY

Minoan Lines

Minoan Lines’ Santorini Palace is a state of the art catamaran that can reach up to 38 knots while transporting 1,160 passengers and 100 vehicles. From April 5 to October 14 the ship departs Mykonos at 14:25 and arrives in Santorini at 17:30, making stops in Paros and Ios on the way.

Hellenic Seaways

The company has both standard ferries and high-speed catamaran options. The schedule can change without advanced notice, so you should check them constantly if you are planning a trip. From March 30 to September 30 the company’s FlyingCat 4 leaves Mykonos at 9:35 in the morning and arrives at Santorini at noon (daily departures except Tuesday and Wednesday). During the high season, usually starting from June, the company’s ferry routes will operate on Tuesday and Wednesday as well.

If you prefer larger and steadier ferries to avoid seasickness then you should probably choose the HighSpeed 7, which departs Mykonos at 13:50 and arrives in Santorini at 16:30 from March 30 to September 30.

Golden Star Ferries

The company operates the newly purchased Superrunner (2017) and Supercat (2018) high-speed crafts that are the most popular ones of their class. During the summer period, the company’s ferries have daily trips to Paros, Naxos, Tinos, Mykonos, Ios, and Santorini Island. Super runner departs Mykonos at around 10:00 in the morning and arrives in Santorini at 14:00. Supercat travels the same route in 2h 50m, leaving at 15:20 and arriving at to Santorini at 18:10.

SeaJets

Being the smallest ferries of the company, SeaJet 2 and SuperJet can take you to your destination faster but with a bumpy ride. These two options may also be inconvenient when traveling with a lot of luggage. The ferries start operating from March till October, leaving Mykonos at 9:45 early morning and arriving at Santorini at 11:50.

If you do have a lot of luggage, take ChampionJet 2 or MegaJet that also transport vehicles. ChampionJet2 usually departs Mykonos early at 09:40 and arrives at 11:30, and  MegaJet travels around 3 hours, by leaving at 13:55 and arriving at Santorini at 17:00.

Blue Star Ferries

High-speed catamarans may get you to your destination, however, they do not allow passengers on deck. Plus, it may be a rough ride, when the sea is choppy. So, if you are seasick and don’t mind shifting ferries on your way to Santorini, you might want to consider the Blue Star Ferries. Blue star ferries have the largest ferries with open decks sailing to Santorini. You can choose one of the above high-speed ferry options to travel to either Naxos or Paros and continue your trip with a Blue Star Ferry, that will allow you to enjoy the beautiful views of the sea and islands as you arrive in Santorini port. However the Blue Star leaves Paros at 11:40 am and Naxos at 12:50 pm, which means you might need to stay overnight at the transit island in case your ferry from Mykonos fails to get you there on time.

From Mykonos to Santorini by FLIGHT (hint: with one-stop in Athens or Thessaloniki. No Direct Flight Available)

Travelers that don’t have much time can choose traveling by flight as an alternative way of getting from Mykonos to Santorini. Unfortunately, there are currently no direct flights from Mykonos to Santorini, even during the peak season of July, August, September. If you insist on traveling with a flight, you will have to do a one-stop at the Athens Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos airport, or AIA), or at the Thessaloniki Airport (SKG, Macedonia Airport).
The Mykonos to Santorini flight ticket cost is usually around 70 to 80 euros.

From Mykonos to Santorini by Helicopter

For an exciting journey from Mykonos to Santorini, there are chartered helicopters available, to give you the spectacular views of the Aegean Sea and Santorini from the air. The flight duration is 40 minutes and there are multiple tours offering different traveling options and times for visiting these two beautiful islands. Of course, this travel option is not cheap, the price starts at 600 €/person.
